Ransomware in Healthcare: It's Disruption, Distraction, and Data Theft
Ransomware attacks are about disruption, distraction, and data theft happening at the same time.
Nelson Carreira breaks down how modern threat actors operate. While one attack disrupts operations, another may be quietly exfiltrating sensitive data. That complexity is why healthcare organizations must prepare for recovery environments that allow clinical operations to continue safely while production systems are rebuilt.
As he explains:
“If it’s the tier zero thing, you need to have an isolated recovery environment where you'd have different zones to rebuild your environment so that your clinicians could then use a secure endpoint and a secure network to not only look up information on the patient, but then also to continue documenting.”
Because when hospitals are down for weeks, the operational consequences grow quickly.
“Think about the pile of paper that they had to ingest. There were bound to be tons of errors.”
A stark reminder that cyber resilience is a patient safety issue, along with being a tech problem.
