Kroll’s 2021 Data Breach Outlook has identified a 140% increase in data breach notification cases from 2019 to 2020. Industries such as healthcare, education and financial services, which were the most impacted in 2019, continued to be hard hit in 2020 and, so far, in 2021 too. However, the greatest increases occurred in industries that were generally spared in 2019. Data attacks became broader and deeper during the COVID-19 pandemic, a trend that has continued throughout the recovery.

On Friday, 7th May, the organisation confirmed that a ransomware attack had forced it to shut down all its IT infrastructure – an infection attributed to the DarkSide cybercrime gang. However, just one week later, amid reports that a ransom of around $5 million had been paid out, DarkSide announced that it had stopped operating entirely.

A botnet is a network of hijacked computers and devices infected with malware and controlled remotely by cybercriminals. This network is then used to send spam and launch Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. It can also be rented out to other cybercriminals. The Emotet botnet has been a thorn in the side of security teams for many years and has infected hundreds of thousands of devices since 2014.
